Frequently Asked Questions

Fequerently Asked Questions

What can I expect to gain from working with the SOURCE Institute?

The SOURCE Institute experience is primarily one of personal growth. You can expect to become more flexible, improve posture, and become stronger and faster—all resulting in better protection from injury and enhanced sports performance. You can also expect to benefit emotionally, experiencing improved self-esteem, confidence, motivation, and discipline. SOURCE Coaches are expert coaches. We know how to help people change behaviors, and changing behaviors is the single most important part of improving health and performance.

What is your training method?

The SOURCE training methodology is based on the six physical qualities of: flexibility, stability, strength, power, speed, and functional movement.

Our training model begins with the Foundation Phase. In this cycle of training, emphasis is placed on creating structural integrity by working on the flexibility and stability of the joints. The Foundation Phase is about establishing functional movement through the entire kinetic chain.

We then move on to the Development Phase, establishing full body strength using multiple joint movements.

Finally, in the Transfer Phase the strength that has been developed is applied to sports-specific power and speed.

What is the difference between a Trainer and a Performance Coach?

SOURCE Trainers are competent to implement the strength and conditioning programs in all phases of our training model. SOURCE Performance Coaches are master trainers who conduct consultations and assessments, establish appropriate goals, design programs, and conduct performance testing. Performance Coaches also provide nutritional consultation, lifestyle management, soft tissue work, and motivational enhancement.

What are the purposes of the Consultation and Assessments?

The consultation and assessments allow the Performance Coach to establish the client’s needs in order to design the appropriate program. The consultation is an interview during which we discuss the client’s goals, medical and injury history, training experience, and lifestyle habits.

There are three types of assessments currently implemented by Performance Coaches. New clients will begin with a Structural Assessment, during which we examine the structural alignment, range of motion, stability of the joints, and functional movement patterns. Later in the training program, Performance Assessments designed to monitor the physical qualities of strength, power, and speed are conducted. Also available is the SOURCE Assessment, which involves a thorough examination of the client’s motivation, mind set, and beliefs.

Where does training take place?

Training takes place at the SOURCE Performance and Wellness Centers located at The Hun School of Princeton in Princeton, New Jersey, George School, Cherry Valley Country Club and The Pennington School, located in Pennington, New Jersey.

My child has a learning disability. Will he be given special attention?

Yes. SOURCE Trainers and Performance Coaches attend continuing education modules prepared by Dr. Leming which inform staff members of the possible implications of prevalent adolescent diagnoses, including: ADHD, ADD, eating disorders, body image disorders, mood disorders, OCD, Asperger’s Syndrome, alcohol and drug use disorders, and various learning disabilities. These modules allow SOURCE Trainers and Performance Coaches to design programs for and train your child with sensitivity to possible psychological, neurological, and medicinal implications. The SOURCE Institute works with your child, taking into account real life stressors that can have a dramatic impact on their health, performance, and safety.

How much individual attention does the client receive during training?

The answer to this question depends on both the client’s preferences and needs. Individual sessions are excellent for addressing unique structural issues, especially during the Foundation Phase. However, small group training has several benefits, including: social reinforcement, improved exercise adherence, and a reduction in per-session cost.

How much experience do you have in this field?

Dr. Leming has over 40,000 hours of training and coaching experience as a Performance Coach. He has worked with clients of all ages, from adolescents to seniors. In addition to the individual expertise our trainers bring to SOURCE, they all receive further training by Dr. Leming until they become proficient in the SOURCE model.
